Aware of a dearth of sources covering “accessible scholarship that addresses the social problems confronting Asian Americans today,” the editors of this set have produced an informative resource for college students, educators, social workers, and anyone else with an interest or investment in the Asian American community. Issues impacting Asian Americans as a conglomerate group are considered, as well as those confronting significant subgroups, such as Japanese, Chinese, and Korean Americans along with more recently arrived populations from Southeast Asia (Vietnamese and Cambodian, Hmong and Thai, for example). The volumes are divided into thematic sections: “Diversity and Demographics”; “Economy and Work”; “Education”; “Health”; “Identity”; “Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship”; “Law”; “Media”; “Politics”; “War”; and “Youth, Family, and the Aged.” Each section begins with an overview essay that is followed by highly readable A–Z articles on significant subtopics. The section on “Economy and Work,” for example, begins with the overview and goes on to treat (among other issues) Accent discrimination, Housing, Poverty, and Small businesses. Each essay concludes with a list of print and online resources for further reading as well as source notes. Sections as a whole conclude with a resource guide giving suggested readings, films, organizations, and Web sites to consult. Sidebars on related topics and well-placed black-and-white photographs extend the text well. Given the essay format, there are no cross-references within articles. The detailed index (which contains designations for sidebars, figures, and tables) fills in reasonably well as a source of cross-references and extends points of entry beyond the excellent table of contents. The use of demographic information is especially strong. Complementing Sharpe's Asian American History and Culture (2009), this is a recommended purchase for college and university libraries as well as for school districts and social agencies serving Asian American immigrant populations. Also available as an e-book. --Ann Welton
